When Does It Matter

When does it matter?  That is a good question.  I wonder if any of us can answer that truthfully.  When does it matter is a question that is only answerable by you.
When the kids are at home there is "No jumping on the bed."  It matters.  When they are at Grandmas she is jumping on it with them.  It doesn't matter.  But sometime there are things in life that need to matter to everybody.
Yesterday I wrote about an actor who by all accounts had tweeted derogetory things about women.
I can not tell you how fired up I am about this man getting to say these things and getting away with it with no one holding him accountable.
Nickelodeon is promoting this character as if it were perfectly normal and so acceptable for a man to talk about women the way he did.
When does it matter?
It matters to me now.
I know he will possibly say "I am sorry."  He has even taken some of the tweets down, not all of them.  And that is all good and fine.  But is that enough?
If it was your daughter getting the holy boogers beat out of her and her boyfriend or husband said, "I am sorry."  Would you encourage her to stay with him?  No?  Why not?  Because he has no respect for women.  If he hit her one time he will do it again.  It would matter.
If Mr. Biggs had said these things about your wife, your sister, your mother or your friend then he turned around and said, "Sorry."  Would you be able to look your wife, your sister, your mother or your friend in the eye and say, "He says he's sorry so it's okay."  Would it matter then?
How are you going to explain to your children who will be watching this piece of trash when they say I want to go see this guy?  Are you going to let them?  We all know that these characters, the turtles, will become super heroes to most of our children.  Do you want your son emulating this man?  Do you want your daughters idolizing this man?
If Nickelodeon won't listen, maybe their sponsors will.  Maybe it will matter to them.
I don't know who all of their sponsors are but I do know that I will find out and will be shooting off a few letters to them.
It has to matter to someone.
Maybe they care more about our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews than Nickelodeon does.
Maybe it matters to them.
Does it matter to you?
